From the editor:

We begin 2016 with our first issue of the year and invite you to read a variety of contributions that we have to offer. In this issue six articles are presented which are of interest to all of you. It should be mentioned that we have recently become an indexed journal with Latindex and we encourage you to take a look at this issue as well as our archives and think about what you could write about for the MJ.

The refereed article "Attending a Convention as Professional Development for EFL Teachers" by Araceli Salas (Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla) explores why teachers attend conferences and what they gain from this attendance in a small scale qualitative research project of 32 participants. She also provides insightful suggestions as to what EFL teachers can do after a conference to fully take advantage of these benefits of attending conferences. Also remember that the call for presentations for the 43rd International MEXTESOL Conference ends on May 15 and more information can be found on the webpage (www.mextesol.org.mx).
Martha Sidury Christiansen and Marie-Louise Koelzer (The University of Texas at San Antonio) provide the readers with the refereed article "Digital Storytelling: Using Different Technologies for EFL". They offer a detailed look at the literature concerning digital storytelling--that is, the use of digital devices to create and share personal stories. The authors analyze the implications and limitations of using digital storytelling in the English language classroom and offer examples of activities.

JoAnn Miller, our Associate Editor for Refereed Articles, is getting us all ready for the 40th Anniversary of the MEXTESOL Journal. During this year we will have a number of publications concerning these forty years and we are planning a variety of events at the 43rd Internacional MEXTESOL Convention in Monterrey from Oct. 27-30, 2016. To begin with, JoAnn has written the article "The MEXTESOL Journal: Birth to 1991" which maps out how MJ began and its evolution throughout the years. I am sure you will take pleasure in reading the ups and downs of the history of the MEXTESOL Journal. Some of you may remember this history and others will appreciate how the MJ represents a part of our profession of teaching English as a foreign language here in Mexico.

In this issue we have two reprinted articles from the early days of Communicative Language Teaching from our archives. The first one is "Communicative Competence: The Need for a Comprehensive Definition" by Robert J. Pietro and it was written while the concept of communicative competency was in its developmental stages. The second one is an early article by Stephen D. Krashen, "ESL as Post-Critical Period Learning". Both of these reprints show how aspects of language terms and theories have started and developed throughout the years.

"Gamification: What, Why, and How (Part 3)" is the last of a three-part series on gamification by Josefina C. Santana (Universidad Panamericana). In the other two parts the author has discussed what gamification is, how it is being applied, first, in educational contexts, and, in the second part she explores the use in the language classroom. In this final part she offers practical examples of gamified activities applied to second language teaching and learning.

We hope you enjoy these articles in the first issue for 2016. Mark the important dates of the 43rd International MEXTESOL Conference and the 40th Anniversary of the MEXTESOL Journal on your calendar. The editors of MJ also want to invite you to our festivities during this year and to read our upcoming articles that will be published this year concerning the MEXTESOL Journal. Help us celebrate our 40th Anniversary of the MJ. ...
