From the editor:

The MEXTESOL Journal Editors have been busy getting ready for our 40th Anniversary, marking the four decades that the MJ has been published in Mexico. To celebrate, we have ten articles from Mexico, Spain and the United States in this issue for our readers.

To begin with, 'Language Teachers Become Researchers: Emotions and Workload Intensification in Mexican Higher Institutions' is a refereed article by Mariza G. Méndez López of the Universidad de Quintana Roo in Chetumal. Her article describes a qualitative study of the effects of the PRODEP policy and how language teachers have adapted their work in relation to language teaching practices in Mexican public universities. This study also examined teacher emotions surrounding the insertion of this policy at the language teachers' universities. The author critically analyzes these changes using data from questionnaires, informal discussions and in-depth semi-structured interviews.

Rosario de los Milagros Ruiz Ortega and Patricia Vence González, both from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, have contributed the article 'University Students' Use of Electronic Dictionaries in Hidalgo, Mexico'. This refereed article explains how a descriptive survey of the use of pocket electronic dictionaries (PEDs) on the vocabulary-learning strategies of first-year university students was carried out. Questionnaires were given to 175 students from seven programs at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo and the results showed that students preferred PEDS and more specifically those for cellular phones over the paper versions.

In this issue we have two non-refereed articles: 'School Based Curriculum a Potential Alternative to Innovate the ELT Curriculum in Mexican Higher Education Institutions' and 'Factors to Consider When Teaching Listening Comprehension in the EFL/ESL Classroom'. In the first article Fernando M. Peralta Castro (Universidad de Colima) discusses the importance of considering the perspectives of teachers and students when implementing changes in the curriculum. The school-based curriculum development is discussed as a possible model to consider when designing an ELT curriculum in higher education institutes. In the other article, Orestes Vega (Miami Dade College) gives advice on how to teach listening comprehension. Both articles are of interest for our readers in EFL/ESL contexts.

In addition, three reflective articles from Editors of the MEXTESOL Journal are included: 1) 'Reflections on My Experiences as a MEXTESOL Journal--Editor and Guest Editor' by Natalia Martínez León (Universidad de Málaga, Spain); 2) 'The MEXTESOL Journal: 2003-2010' by Ulrich Schrader; and 3) 'Responding to the Demands and Evolving Growth: Martha's Reflections on Working on the MEXTESOL Journal' by M. Martha Lengeling (Universidad de Guanajuato). These authors reminisce their experiences as editors and provide the readers snapshots of history of the MEXTESOL Journal.

The article 'MEXTESOL and ELT: A Journey through the Eyes of Terrence Nevin Siders Vogt' is an interview with Nevin who was the Editor of the MEXTESOL Newletter. This interview was written by Elizabeth Flores Villalobos (Alexander Bain Irapuato), Liliana Lizett Llanas Reséndiz (Universidad de Guanajuato) and Susana Vanegas Uriostegui (Tecnológico de Monterrey).

In this issue Ruth Ban (Editor of Book Reviews) offers an examination of Johnson and Golombek's (2016) The Language of Responsive Mediation for L2 Educators: Mindful L2 Teacher Education. A Sociocultural Perspective on Cultivating Teachers' Professional Development. This book provides insight into examining teacher education praxis through a sociocultural lens and shows how the authors use data from their own pedagogical experiences as teacher educators to exemplify sociocultural mediation of teacher growth and development as a potential tool for our readers.
Our last contribution is 'Exploring the Use of Transmedia Storytelling in the Classroom' by Josefina C. Santana (Universidad Panamericana). She discusses how to engage students by using a variety of digital and traditional resources and specifically transmedia storytelling.

We are also planning a number of events for our 40th Anniversary of the MEXTESOL Journal at the 43rd International MEXTESOL Convention with the theme of 'Dynamic Teaching: New Trends in EFL' from October 27-30, 2016 in Monterrey. If you are at the convention, please stop by the MEXTESOL Journal stand where you can talk with the editors, members of the Editorial Board and the Advisory Board, as well as our reviewers. Cake and a book raffle will be provided at the stand. Other events include two presentations at the conference that offer insight into academic writing and publishing. The panel discussion 'Writing and Publishing in Academic Journals: Whys and Hows' will be given on Thurs. Oct. 27 (14:30). This panel discussion is of interest for those who would like to write and publish an article or for those who have specific question concerning this topic and would like to ask our panel. On Saturday (Oct. 29 at 19:00) past and present editors of the journal will present the plenary 'The MEXTESOL Journal: Forty years of ELT in Mexico'. Come and help us celebrate our 40th! ...
