From the editor:

We start 2017 with eight contributions from different parts of the world for the first issue. They come from Dubai, Ecuador, Iran, Mexico, and the United States and bring an array of topics to read.

In this issue, we have three refereed articles. The first refereed article, 'Learners' Discourse Functions during Interactions for Speaking Practice in English as a Foreign Language Classrooms in a Mexican University', is written by Edgar Emmanuell García Ponce of the Universidad de Guanajuato. The study is related to the extent in which communication in the classroom leads to the development of the learners' discourse competence. It also explores the opportunities the learners had to initiate discourse functions during uncontrolled practice.

The second article, 'Survey of Corpus-Based Vocabulary Lists for TESOL Classes', is by Alison M. Youngblood (Western Kentucky University) and Keith S. Folse (University of Central Florida). This extensive survey summarizes over one hundred years of research in corpus based vocabulary lists with an examination of 31 vocabulary lists divided into four categories: general, academic, disciplinary, and formulaic. Each list is analyzed as to its developmental process and content.

Sasan Baleghizadeh and Tahere Karamzade, both from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran, have contributed the refereed article 'Iranian EFL Learners' Perceptions of Various Language Activities in an Ideal English Class'. The study examines 190 Iranian EFL learners' views concerning their preferences of language activities. The implications of the study are of interest for both teachers and curriculum developers.

Having celebrating the MEXTESOL Journal's 40th Anniversary in October of 2016 at the 43rd International MEXTESOL Convention in Monterrey, we now have the transcription of the message from Dudley Reynolds (Carnegie Mellon University in Dubai), President of TESOL International Association.

Ligia Fernanda Espinosa Cevallos from the IKIAM Regional University in Ecuador offers practical suggestions for working with the diversity of students that we frequently encounter in our classrooms in her article 'Creating Supportive EFL Classrooms for Diverse Students of Ecuador'. Although she refers specifically to her context in Ecuador, her suggestions and observations can easily be applied to other teaching contexts.

The article 'Experiencias en la Modificación de un Plan de Estudios de Licenciatura: Sistematización de Experiencias', by Myrna Elizabeth Balderas Garza, María Isolda Vermont Ricalde and María Teresa Gullotti Vázquez (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán), discusses the process of updating a degree program in English language teaching at a public university in Mexico.

Amanda K. Wilson (Universidad de Guanajuato) has submitted the article 'A Narrator of Stories Shares His Own: An Interview with Gary Barkhuizen'. Barkhuizen is well-known in the ELT world for his work in the field of narrative inquiry, which uses stories as a data collection tool.

Also in this issue, Maitham Al-Lami (Barry University) offers our readers a book review of Nunan's (2016) Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: An Introduction. The book is an introductory self-study guide for novice teachers and undergraduate TESOL students who are looking for a basic understanding of issues and concepts relating to teaching ESL/EFL students.

We hope you enjoy this first issue of 2017 and we invite you to send in your contributions to the MEXTESOL Journal. ...
