From the editor:

For our second issue of 2017 we have contributions from Mexico and the United States. The articles from Mexico come from Chetumal, Guanajuato, Guadalajara, and Hermosillo while the article from the United States is from Utah. A number of the authors have published with us in the past such as Jose Luis Ramirez-Romero, Randall Davis, Amanda K. Wilson and Josefina C. Santana. The MEXTESOL Journal would like to thank these authors who have published with us a number of times.

Héctor Alonso Salazar Sorcia, José Luis Ramírez-Romero, and Manuel Lizcano Acuña (Universidad de Sonora, Hermosillo) have submitted the first article "WebQuests in EFL Courses: A New Look for a Classic Activity". This refereed article is a description of the use of an online WebQuest generator (Wix.com) developed by the authors to help high school students improve their fluency and pronunciation. It also includes a general introduction to WebQuests and their evolution, and the results of research into the use and reception of the generator by group of participating students.

The next refereed article "Los Futuros Profesores de Inglés: Experiencia Previa y Sentido de Auto Eficacia" by María del Rosario Reyes-Cruz and Griselda Murrieta-Loyo (Universidad de Quintana Roo, Chetumal) is an exploratory multiple method study to identify the self-efficacy beliefs of group of future English teachers at a Mexican university.

The use of technology in the classroom can be attractive for students, but it can also be overwhelming for teachers. In their non-refereed article "New Twists on Using Smart Phones in the 21st-Century Classroom", Randall Davis and Rus Wilson of the University of Utah offer detailed suggestions for a variety of activities and sites.

Some teachers may believe that discourse analysis is for researchers only. However, Sergio Iván Durand Sepúlveda (Bristol Inglés Profesional), in his article "Discourse Analysis in Small Doses: Context and Functions Building Meaning", explains how it helps learners discover the meaning in a text. He offers practical suggestions for incorporating discourse analysis into class activities.

In this issue's book review, Amanda K. Wilson (Universidad de Guanajuato) reviews Farrell's (2015) Promoting Teacher Reflection in Second Language Education: A Framework for TESOL Professionals. In this volume, Farrell affords the reader important insight into how reflective practice can be implemented for novice to expert teachers. A taxonomy of reflective practice is offered to allow teachers to decide where to enter the framework according to their own assessment of their teaching experience. As a result, this book is equally valuable for any second language ' or content area ' teacher, as a means of continuing their professional development.

Josefina C. Santana (Universidad Panamericana) discusses a study on the variables that contribute to learning a second language in her article 'What Really Leads to Proficiency in English Language Learners?' She looked at factors such as how long the students had studied English, whether they had studied in public or private schools, and if they liked to read. Students' responses to these questions were correlated to their results on an English placement test.

To conclude we would like to invite our readers to submit their articles in Spanish or English for future publication in the MEXTESOL Journal. Another reminder is that the upcoming 44th International MEXTESOL Convention will be held in Leon, Guanajuato from November 9-12, 2017. This year's convention theme is 'Strengthening Learning Communities' and the call for presentation proposals is open until May 15, 2017 (see www.mextesol.org). We hope to see you there. ...
