From the editor:

It is with great pleasure that I introduce this issue of the MEXTESOL Journal. In this issue we have five articles (four refereed and one non-refereed) for our MEXTESOL Journal readers throughout the world. These articles come from Mexico, Iran, and the United States.

The first refereed article, 'The impact of context on learning idioms in EFL classes', discusses a research project carried out by Fatemeh Mohamadi Asl (Allameh Tabataba'i University) concerning how the use of a context affects the learning of idiomatic expressions and the learners' retention of these expressions.

Another article concerning vocabulary is from Iran. 'The effect of visually-supported vocabulary instruction on beginner EFL learners' vocabulary gain' by Karim Sadeghi and Bahareh Farzizadeh (Urmia University, Iran)is aimed at looking at how beginner EFL learners responded to two different teaching techniques of vocabulary: visual aids and the traditional definition technique. The results show that the use of visuals enhances the learning of vocabulary.

The next refereed article from Mexico is 'Quality criteria for designing learning objects for English language teachers' by Ana Bertha Tiscareño Ramírez (Colegio de Posgraduados) and María Soledad Ramírez Montoya (Tecnológico de Monterrey). They discuss what a learning object is, its advantages, and their research of designing learning objects in relationship to quality criteria for possible training of EFL teachers.

Clare Marie Roche and Dilip Verma, both of the Universidad Regional del Sureste in Oaxaca, have submitted the refereed article 'The perception of students on the effectiveness of implementing a blended learning course in Legal English in the Master's Degree in either Constitutional Law or Fiscal Law'. The authors describe how a blended learning course was carried out at their university and the students' opinions of this course.

Our final contribution 'Salavadorian educational discourse' is a contribution from DeAnna Coon (University of Maryland) whose research project explains the learning culture of El Salvador based upon interviews of Salvadoran immigrants in the United States. This article is of interest for any teacher in both countries and for our readers in Mexico.

I hope you enjoy this issue and continue to support us by submitting your articles and reading our journal. I would also like to mention MEXTESOL will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary (1973-2013) as an organization at the MEXTESOL International Convention in Queretaro November 7-10, 2013. The theme for this year's convention is 'Four decades of innovation in ELT'.
