From the editor:

Welcome to this issue and I hope to see you all at the 40th International MEXTESOL Convention in Queretaro from November 7-10, 2013, where we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the organization. The theme for this year's convention is 'Four decades of innovation in ELT'. Because of this celebration, we have reminisced on what has been published in the MEXTESOL Journal throughout the years and now we will start a new section of our journal which is called Vintage Articles. Having selected articles which we think are important, we are republishing them for your reading. I also invite you to explore our past articles in our archive on the web site. In this issue we have six articles for our readers.

Our first vintage article to be republished is from Marianne Celce-Murcia who wrote the article 'Language teaching methods from the ancient Greeks to Gattegno' in 1980 (Vol. 4, No.4). JoAnn Miller (Associate Editor of Refereed Articles of the MEXTESOL Journal) contacted her and received an introduction from Marianne who is currently working as Professor Emerita at the Department of Applied Linguistics and TESL Department at the University of California-Los Angeles. This article is of great use for any student, teacher, or teacher trainer interested in the history of methodologies. We hope you enjoy this new section of Vintage Articles.

Our second article, 'How SLA theory changed my practice: Content area teachers of ELLs talk', comes from two authors, Holly Hansen-Thomas and Liliana Grosso (Texas Woman's University). This refereed article looks at how SLA courses play an imperative role for mainstream content area teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs). These teachers widely held that theories of SLA were instrumental to improve learning and teaching, but at the same time the application was not an easy task for all of the teachers.

The next article, 'University students' beliefs, perceptions and attitudes towards communicative language teaching', was written by six authors (Craig Gamble, Kwansei Gakuin University; Jonathan Aliponga and Yasuko Koshiyama, Kansai University of International Studies; Michael Wilkins, Ritsumeikan University; Keiko Yoshida, Konan University; Shirley Ando, Otemae University). Based upon research carried out in three private universities in Japan, this refereed article explores students' beliefs, perceptions and attitudes of communicative language teaching using questionnaires.

To continue we have another refereed article by Valentin Ekiaka Nzai and Faustin K. Boleli (Texas A&M University ' Kingsville). The name of their article is 'Challenges faced by bilingual children from mixed parents in predominantly monolingual-monocultural Spanish-speaking extended families'. This article deals with the complexities of raising children bilingually based upon qualitative research of three 8-10 year old children. Themes explored are intercultural and interracial issues of these children in relations to their parents and extended family members. While it is obvious that being brought up bilingual is beneficial, the authors looked at the phenomenological problems they encountered.

Sandra Mercuri (University of Texas at Brownsville) submitted a refereed article named, 'Re-conceptualizing science instruction for English language learners'. This article discusses a case study of how a teacher promotes academic language and literacy skills in a science class using inquiry-based lessons.

Finally the non-refereed article, 'Vocabulary teaching: Focused tasks for enhancing acquisition in EFL contexts', was written by Adrian Bello Uriarte of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bello's article presents a series of activities following a task-based approach to teaching vocabulary in an EFL classroom. He argues that this approach can help learners improve their lexicon both in a receptive as well as a productive way.

We hope to see you at the conference and we also invite you to celebrate our 40th anniversary by sending in an article for the MEXTESOL Journal. As always, we appreciate how our readers have supported us throughout the years.
