From the editor:

For the third issue of 2017 we have eight contributions, which come from a variety of authors from China, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and the United States. These contributions include three refereed articles, two non-refereed articles, two interviews and a book review. We hope you enjoy reading these articles.

The first refereed article, 'Technology and Telenovelas: Incorporating Culture and Group Work in the L2 Classroom' describes a qualitative study exploring the use of technology to introduce cultural context in small group activities. Based upon Walker and Baets (2009) Instructional Design Framework this study uses the soap opera La Reina del Sur as the cultural background. The authors are Chesla Ann Lenkaitis (formerly Chesla Ann Bohinski) and Benjamin English, both from Binghamton University in the United States.

Our next refereed article, 'The Role of Texting and Digital Multiliteracies in the EFL Classroom' is by M. Sidury Christiansen (University of Texas-San Antonio, Texas), Shikun Li (University of Texas-San Antonio, Texas) and Melissa R. Bailey (Jilin University Lambton College, China). This article is an examination of texting and other message functions developed using multiliteracies. It also explains how these can be addressed in the classroom to promote critical awareness of language use in digital platforms in authentic modern ways.

David Wealthy Guerrero from the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas in Colombia submitted the refereed article 'Fostering a Positive EFL Class Environment through the use of the Arts'. This article is based on a qualitative investigation of the effectiveness of using drama, theater, and painting as visual art forms to promote an EFL learning environment where students can interact in English, based on an examination of Colombian fifth grade EFL classes.

For our non-refereed articles, we have two contributions. The first is 'Helping Spanish Speakers Better Understand and Use Verb-Noun Collocations in English' by Agnes Orosz (Universidad Nacional de Educación del Ecuador). In her article she discusses how the use of collocations can increase learner fluency and intelligibility and she offers suggestions for teaching and practicing collocations in the classroom.

In 'Employing Group Work to Foster Speaking Skills: A Study of Success and Failure in the Classroom', author Divya John (SSN College of Engineering, in Chennai, India) shares ideas from her research and practice to make group work more effective.

For this issue we have two interviews to share with our readers. Isaac Frausto (Universidad de Guanajuato) interviewed researcher and author Mary Petron for 'Exploring Transnationals and the Borderlands: An Interview with Mary Petron'. In her book, Mary offers insights nto transnationalism ' which she defines as operating in two cultures without being subsumed into either, as well as perspectives of translanguaging.

Our second interview, 'Discussing the Chaos/Complexity Theory from an EFL Perspective: An Interview with Professor Larsen-Freeman' was conducted by Edgar Emmanuell Garcia-Ponce and Irasema Mora-Pablo (both from the Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico). Many of us have read the work of Diane Larsen-Freeman for years and will be interested to read this interview.

This issue's book review, written by David Martinez (University of Texas-San Antonio, Texas), examines the book Penny Ur's 100 Teaching Tips. The reviewer describes the book as an easy-to-read edition with 100 tips to support English language teachers in their classroom practice. The volume is based on findings from applied linguistic research as well as the authors' ample teaching experiences.

We would like to congratulate our authors for their contributions in this issue and recognize that a number of these authors have published with us in the past and they continue to support the MEXTESOL Journal. Thank you. We invite others to submit their articles in English or Spanish.

The 44th International MEXTESOL Convention is around the corner and it will be held from November 9-12, 2017 in León, Guanajuato. Please stop by and see us at the MEXTESOL Journal stand.
