From the editor:

We start 2017 with eight contributions from different parts of the world for the first issue. They come from Dubai, Ecuador, Iran, Mexico, and the United States and bring an array of topics to read.

In this issue, we have three refereed articles. The first refereed article, “Learners’ Discourse Functions during Interactions for Speaking Practice in English as a Foreign Language Classrooms in a Mexican University”, is written by Edgar Emmanuell García Ponce of the Universidad de Guanajuato. The study is related to the extent in which communication in the classroom leads to the development of the learners’ discourse competence. It also explores the opportunities the learners had to initiate discourse functions during uncontrolled practice.
