Abstract: The idea of 'communicative competence', referring to a learner's knowledge of the syntax, morphology, and phonology of a language and their social knowledge of how and when to use the language correctly. The term 'communicative competence' was coined by D. H. Hymes (1966) became one of the basic concepts of communicative language teaching. In this reprint, Robert J. Di Pietro, a founding member of TESOL and an early supporter of the communicative language movement, discusses three types of communicative errors that can impede communication and suggestions on how teachers can help students acquire the needed communication strategies.

Resumen: La idea de competencia comunicativa se refiere al conocimiento de la sintaxis, morfologí­a, y fonologí­a del estudiante sobre un lenguaje y su conocimiento social de cómo y cuándo se debe usar el lenguaje correctamente. El término competencia comunicativa fue acuñado por D. H. Hymes (1966) y ha llegado a ser uno de los conceptos básicos en la enseñanza del lenguaje comunicativo. En este sobretiro Robert J. Di Pietro, un miembro fundador de TESOL y un apoyador del movimiento del lenguaje comunicativo discute tres tipos de errores comunicativos que pueden inhibir la comunicación y da sugerencias de cómo los profesores pueden ayudar a los estudiantes para la adquisición de las estrategias de comunicación necesarias.
