Abstract: The following article, Native Versus Non-Native Speaker: Professionalism over inheritance, was chosen to be reprinted in representation of the time I was Editor of the MEXTESOL Journal. Among the many reasons it was chosen are: 1) it is representative of the state of the issue of Native vs. Non-Native English Teachers in the Mexico of 1994, written by a native English speaker who had chosen Mexico to be his home; 2) the author, Peter Hubbard, was a much loved teacher, who left us in 2008 when he still had so much to offer. 3) Peter was also on our original Editorial Board, one of the early proponents of distance learning in Mexico, as well as a driving force for the professionalization of ELT in Mexico. Resumen: El siguiente artículo, Maestro nativo vs. maestro no-nativo: profesionalismo sobre herencia, fue seleccionado para reimprimirse de la época en la que yo fui editor del MEXTESOL Journal. Entre las diversas razones por las que fue seleccionado estaban: 1) es representativo del estado del tema de profesores de ingles "nativos vs. no nativos" en el México de 1994, escrito por un parlante nativo del inglés que había seleccionado a México como su lugar de residencia; 2) el autor, Peter Hubbard, era un profesor muy querido quien nos abandonó en 2008 cuando el tenía aún mucho que ofrecer. 3) Peter pertenecía asimismo a nuestro mesa editorial, y era, tanto uno de los primeros proponentes del aprendizaje a distancia en México, como una fuerza motriz para la profesionalización de la enseñanza del inglés en México.
